Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 within Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to become creative and drawn by the arts. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could continue her passion of theater and literature throughout the day. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an instrument for social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of social issues and taught how to express herself through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and educated. Her father recalled the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay used the time they spent there to help in her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. While she was still an undergraduate student DuVernay began to consider producing to broadcast journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash in the house by a member jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism duties, and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist at an unassuming production studio after graduating from college. After this, she founded her own firm of public relations that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also established a range of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
